Ardour is an open source Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)

The world of music software is vast and there are many different choices that creators can make about what kinds of software tools they use. But most of them share common fundamental paradigms and work flow. When you learn one piece of music software, it makes learning others dramatically easier and faster. In your personal work and in your final project, you can use whatever software you choose. We will be using Ardour for all of the homework assignments and the final project.

We have chosen to use Ardour because it is open source, in-expensive, and it works on Mac, Windows and Linux. It lacks some of the functionality of common commercial software but it is a great place to learn the fundamental skillset that you will use in all of your sound and music endeavors.

1) Go to https://community.ardour.org/download and download Ardour 5.

2) Unless you have experience building sofatware packages, choose the Ready-to-Run Program.

3) Click on the link corresponding to your operating system.

3) Check a box that determines whether you download either the 32bit or 64 bit version of the software for your operating system. If you are unsure if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit CPU on your computer, here are some tips.

Mac: Go to the Apple Menu and select “About this Mac“. If you have a Core Duo processor, you have a 32–bit CPU. Otherwise (Core 2 Duo, Xeon, i3, i5, i7, anything else), you have a 64–bit CPU. Mac OS X is fairly bitness-agnostic, so either should work.

Windows: To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following: Open System by clicking the Start button , right-click Computer, and then click Properties. Under System, you can view the system type.

Linux: Open a terminal and type “arch”. The “arch” prints to the screen whether your system is 32-bit (“i686”) or 64-bit (“x86_64”).

4) Choose your payment option. Ardour is open-source software and they have a commitment to keeping their software inexpensive. So, they give you a number of payment options. If you want to pay as little as possible, you could sign up for a $1/month subscription and cancel it at the end of the quarter. OR you could pay $45 for a single payment that will let you use the software through the next major upgrade. We expect you to not use the trial version which causes the software to go silent every 10 minutes but you are welcome to choose any other payment option.

5) Download and Install Ardour. This should be similar to any other program that you download from the internet. Make sure to also download Jadeo because we might be using it for one of our assignments.

Ardour was created on Linux which usually uses a two-button mouse. Ardour has a completely flexible 'anything to anywhere' routing system, and will allow as many physical I/O ports as your system allows. Ardour supports a wide range of audio-for-video features such as video-synced playback and pullup/pulldown sample rates. You will also find powerful features such as 'persistent undo', multi-language support, and destructive track punching modes that aren't available on other platforms.
